earthdayEARTH Day 2010!

Event: " Ground zero" Bovoni "landfill" and Stalley bay tour

Date: Saturday, April 24
Location: Bovoni Baptist Church across the street from the Texaco Gas Station.

Have you wondered what happens to your waste when you dispose of it?
Come see for yourself with EAST for the post- Earth day weekend tour with the Waste Management Authority and EAST at Bovoni. We will giving a brief presentation on the importance of recycling at the Bovoni church, next to the Texaco gas station and hear a quick tour safety presentation before the tour. We will then move to the main hill area and overlook to hear briefly from Mr. Jim Casey of the VI EPA office then hear from Mr. Steven Aubain of WMA on the history of the site and what is planed for the future by the authority. We plan to visit the water treatment plant and hear about our VI treatment plants by Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Steven Aubain. In addition, we will plan to hear from Marcia Taylor, UVI Marine Science talk about the diverse natural resources of the area and marine reserve sanctuary. Finally we will go to Stalley Bay for a snorkel trip and explore the marine environment of the bay with Paul Jobsis, UVI Marine Science about the bay.

EAST Activities


EAST conducted three Whale Watches February 10th & 24th and March 9th and 24th, 2008. EAST members and guests enjoyed a full day sail aboard the 60 foot catamaran Jolly Mon while eco-guides provided educational information about whales, dolphins, sea birds and other marine life (see March 1, 2004 St. Thomas Source article on this year's whale watches, or March 23, 2003 St. Thomas Source© article on last year's event).

EAST has also conducted successful eco-hike activities, such as the Cas Cay boat trip / hike held March 13, 2005, Sunsi Beach Rally / Snorkel Trip held September 25, 2004, Brown Bay Hike held January 31, 2004, the Magens Bay Hike held October 5th, 2003 (see the Dec. 2003 EAST Newsletter), or the Neltjeberg Hike held in June 2002 (see June 2002 Virgin Islands Daily News© article).
