EAST actively participates in public hearings with our comments. This
includes statements to the legislature, the coastal zone management
commission (CZM) and in other public forums. Please see a listing our

Earth Day Editorial
It was forty years ago this week on April 22, 1970 that the modern
environmental movement was born. Please take a moment this week and
celebrate the many events around the territory including our visit to
Bovoni to see what happens to our waste and the many ways to reduce
the waste stream into the landfill and be a part of the solution. The
first Earth Day in 1970 led to the creation of the United States
Environmental Protection Agency in December of that year, which led
later to the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered
Species acts. Prior to the establishment of the EPA, the national
government was not structured to make a coordinated attack on the
pollutants which harm human health and our environment. Read More

EAST Activities


EAST conducted three Whale Watches February 10th & 24th and March 9th and 24th, 2008. EAST members and guests enjoyed a full day sail aboard the 60 foot catamaran Jolly Mon while eco-guides provided educational information about whales, dolphins, sea birds and other marine life (see March 1, 2004 St. Thomas Source article on this year's whale watches, or March 23, 2003 St. Thomas Source© article on last year's event).

EAST has also conducted successful eco-hike activities, such as the Cas Cay boat trip / hike held March 13, 2005, Sunsi Beach Rally / Snorkel Trip held September 25, 2004, Brown Bay Hike held January 31, 2004, the Magens Bay Hike held October 5th, 2003 (see the Dec. 2003 EAST Newsletter), or the Neltjeberg Hike held in June 2002 (see June 2002 Virgin Islands Daily News© article).
